View Full Version : humidity beads
For those who use humidty beads, what level do you use? 65? 70?
I see that most people tend toward the 65% beads but given how dry the air here is I was wondering if 70% might be a better option.

I use 65% beads exclusively except for the early purchases of 70% beads. It's all personal preference but I like my cigars in the lower range, and have considered even going to the new 60% beads. I prefer lower 60%-62% for those I intend to smoke soon. Our climate will still dictate that we recharge the beads more frequently, unless the seal is excellent.

I agree with Scott 100%. I started with 70% beads and didn't even stay with that for a year before moving to 65% (my current level) I have thought about going to a 60% also, but I just haven't done it yet. I keep my hydra on 65% and it keeps the top shelf within 2% of 65 (usually around 64).
I have delayed buying 65% beads to make sure I wanna stay at that level before I drop $100 on a few pounds of beads lol... or I might just get a second hydra and forget the beads...idk yet.

As Scott says, no need to worry about the areas humidity as you will be controlling it with the beads either up or down.
I use 70% Kitty Litter.
nyuk nyuk
I'm trying to decide on the right humidor for me...cooler, vino or an actual humidor. I like the cooler idea the most except for temp control reasons which pushes me down the vinotemp route. My basement is probably cool enough now that I think about it. Might need to put a thermometer down there to see how cool it gets/stays.

A cooler is the most budget friendly way to store mass amounts of cigars period. You can store tons of boxes for less than $100 usually...
For me, I planned on displaying my cigars and keeping them in a place where we have to look at them so a cooler wasn't the best idea... I bought a cabinet for that. If I run out of room in the cabinet (more like when) I will most likely get a cooler or two and just use them for long term aging of boxes...
A desktop is nice for a few to display, but I got rid of them pretty quick... If you need one, I can sell ya one of my two... plus it would be shipping free so you could get a sweet deal... But I will warn you... you will run out of room in them quick lol... I ran through 2 pretty quick!!

I think while mine might currently be the most unattractive solution, it may be the cheapest if you're looking to house a bunch of cigars. Go find someone trying to get rid of a fridge. (Mine's a bit beat up looking from the 50s) They hold humidity great and I don't have to worry about the temp down in the basement. Don't want something so big? Find a dorm fridge. Want to store in multiple RH levels? Get a side by side. You could even check Craigslist for those True coolers (soda coolers in 7-11) for a few hundred bucks if you want to really see everything.
Just my couple of pennies. (Go cheap, spend money on cigars)
