Curious about whether it is best to leave cigars in the cellophane, or to remove it when storing in your humi. Can anyone tell me the advantages/disadvantages of doing one or the other?

Absolutely...
Advantage of leaving it in the cello:
1.It came in the cello so its original
2.It keeps the wrapper from getting damaged if you move them around a lot
3.I have heard it ages them slower for long term aging
Disadvantages:
1.sealed up so it doesn't breath as much
2.ages slower
3.looks ugly
4.if it is a special smoke like an anejo it could mold if left in the cello
So what do I personally do? I like all my sticks naked... I figure if it is good enough for the cubans then it is good enough for me... plus I just hate cello...idk why I just don't like it... so my personal preference is to take all the cello off...

Well I will give this a shot, from what I have read in many threads like this one I have gleaned the following.
Cello protects the cigar and only slightly slows the aging process so if you are going to be in and out of the humi you may want to leave it on. If you are putting the cigars in the back of the humi not to be seen for years you may want to remove the cello.
Scott, how did I do?

I never remove cello from a cigar until I'm about to fire it up. Everyone has their preferences, and mine is to not mess with it. I'm comfortable aging with or without, in whatever state they came in. I don't have all that many cigars with cello to start with though, but enough. I think both Zach and Jamie have good points.

Zach's a little OCD with his sticks too. I've seen his humi, I know.

Doesn't matter either way to me (usually leave things as is), but you will run into problems with damaged wrappers if you mix those with cello & those without.

The good news is I only have 15 cigars, so none of them touch eachother. Okay, so that really isn't good news...I'm working on it :)

Don't worry about how many you have right now... hanging out with this group is dangerous... one day you will have more than you have room... trust me... I am actually getting close to filling up that damn cabinet I just bought.... At least I have the 2 vinotemps when I need them...

100% agree, but Zach and I learned about cigars together so a lot of this we've developed bouncing ideas around.

I hear ya man. It's a disease. I can't stop looking at cigars now. A month ago I thought I'd never need more than this desktop, now I'm considering cashing in my 401k and pension to spend on cigars and cigar storage  I'll just tell my wife I have no retirement because of the stock market...or just blame it on Mike.

Nah don't cash in the retirement funds just for cigars... although it would be fun, it would suck long term...
You will gradually build up your collection when you start spending your free cash on them lol...

lots of good stuff above, and I pretty much agree with the pros / cons, but here are some other thoughts
I like to buy boxes as I plan on having them around for a while, and it gives me a sense of heritage ( I know where the sticks came from). THe biggest pleasure I get is opening a box, and smelling that wonderful aroma that comes from 20-25 properly humidified cigars resting comfortably in a box. I am robbed of this , when the sticks are in cello. It just smells like plastic.
So off came the cello on the first ` 10-15 boxes.
more recently I have enough stock to where I get that "open box experience" and so the last few have been tossed in the humi as is. Just out of laziness.
actually , as I type this , I realize that I HATE the look of cigars wrapped in a condum, it takes away from the beauty of the stick, removes that great aroma, hurts the fact that I like to reach for a stick partially because it looks great.
DAMN IT!!, I have to go home and remove that crap!
no science,
no experience,
just a preference.

Hahaha...she doesn't hate you or blame you. I really only have a couple more months sliding down the slope, then the baby comes, the wife stops working, and all my money goes towards diapers and food. Until then...I'm going to stock up.

Hmmm, doesn't baby automatically allow you to buy a couple boxes to pass around along with a bottle of scotch and a third box for when they graduate or get married?

That's what I thought too. I told my wife I'd be outside smoking cigars while she was busy birthing, but for some reason she got upset about that plan.

They tend to get cranky about that from what I remember. Didn't want me leaving the room, so I packed a lunch. I thought it was a smart move.

It truly is a personal preference. I leave them on until I move them to my smoking drawer.
Here's a good post to read...
http://cigarnexus.com/counsel/cigarstorage/index.html
and a relevant excerpt.
Q: Should I leave the cellophane on or take it off?
A: Leaving the cellophane on protects the cigars from tattering and splitting while you handle them. Also cellophaned cigars are easier to take on the "road" and to send to friends.
Without the cellophane, cigars tend to breath better, and in turn age better. Also I find it much more appealing to open my humidor and see cigars in the nude.
Cellophane is permeable to water and air allowing their transfer through its surface, but not as easily as without the cellophane. So if I receive a batch of cigars that is freshly rolled I sometimes remove the cello to allow the excess moisture incurred during the rolling process to dissipate. Cigars that become too moist in cellophane take a long time to dry out.
So as a general rule I leave the cellophane on cigars stored loose in my bulk storage units or in their original boxes, but take it off when I place them in my desktop humidors.
Either way is appropriate, and in the end it is really just a matter of personal choice.
