View Full Version : PLEASE READ - Upgrade our forum??

Would you guys like to upgrade our forum to vBulletin software? Its the same software used by CA. I'm thinking as we grow that the features, etc. of vBulletin would enhance the users experience and allow us to provide more features.

We could brand it, etc. Just think of CS or CA

So what do you think?

I am very much in favor of the vBulletin software, as long as the cost is not prohibitive. Just looked it up and at $180 for the license with 1 year of free updates, $40 per year for updates after that, I am willing to chip in. I would not be willing to let any one person take on the cost of the software. We could hold a FRH fundraiser to support it.

Will the PWs lose their post count? http://www.emofaces.com/en/emoticons/f/fingers-crossed-emoticon.gif

Seriously, I am all for an upgrade if the new features it brings will be useful or facilitate easier running of the board. Like Scott, my only other thought would be the cost/benefit ratio for such a small group. It seems like things are running well at the moment & I wouldn't be in support if it was one person bearing the cost.

I am with Peter and Scott on this, if I can contribute I am all for it. :!:

I hope not... if the post count starts over I vote no... otherwise I will have to spew twice as much garbage as before to make up for it...

But in all reality I'm down for whatever and will chip in anytime...

I agree with everyone else.

If it makes life easier for those running the board and we can fund it via the membership, then go for it.
(I have several items that I would donate to a raffle)

The existing software seems to be adequate for me, but I'm not a PW!

I'd love to see the local forums upgraded but only if I get to chip in for the license and yearly fees.

vBulletin is a nice package. The free phpBB software seems to be perfect for this group.

What other features do you feel we need here?

imported_macms

Oh hell, I don't know what other features we "need", but there are several that would be nice to have. For example a new home page that is included in VB and better post editing and pic management. Besides, I'm bored and love the challenge of doing something new. As for cost, Santa said I've been a good boy so I'm expecting something in my stocking besides coal.

I believe I can import posts, post counts, etc. so we wouldn't lose content. Will know more about this when Santa comes.

We have about 30 users and most aren't that active. Perhaps we would appeal to inactive users with a more "sophisticated" presence. Maybe not.

If it isn't broke, don't fix it. Wise words, but I want to build a community in Colorado and I'm just not happy with phpBB as the vehicle to accomplish this.

Your offers to help are appreciated and down the road if you perceive value, we can discuss this further.

Let's keep talking. Thanks

I'm with all the others. If it makes it better for you then I'll support it, fiscally as well as morally.

I don't care how good a boy you've been this year (and you've been a very good boy btw), if Santa brings a new board to you the elves might not be very happy with him.

BTW, I am in favor of keeping post totals. (Isn't that a cereal?)

I agree that a "grown up" looking forum will come off slightly more sophisticated, and thus may appeal to a wider range of Front Range cigar enthusiast. This isn’t a small fly by night group; I think that our site could better represent that. Keep in mind this website is often our first point of contact with people and it would be nice to put our best face forward.

There's many details to be worked out still. Please remember that the intention of the board was not to replace or compete with all the friggin' boards out there, but to provide a place for locals to find out when and where the herfs, meetups and get togethers are. Also, to share deals and splits to benefit as many people as possible. I'd be disappointed if this place just became another board to be lost in the crowd.
