I just wanted to keep everyone informed about what is going on with me so you guys don't worry to much.
Basically my grandpa had a major hemorrhagic stroke on Christmas eve and has been in the hospital ever since. He regained a bit of consciousness in the day or two after his stroke and we got to see him again. My whole family came down to see him cuz he is the rock in the family that holds it all together. Well he has been in and out but basically he is just getting worse and has a really hard time moving.
We talked to several specialists and they have basically told us that this stroke is a catastrophic event and that his chances are really slim of making it through this and if he did make it, he would almost certainly have a very poo quality of life. So they asked us to do what he would want us to do.
We had a family meeting with the people who know him best and we all agreed that as strong and independent as he is, if he can't walk, or eat, or talk, or use the bathroom without assistance then he wouldn't want us to save him. He would just be devastated with living a poor quality of life.
So we made the decision to pull him off the IV drip and all antibiotics. We also decided not to give him a feeding tube as that is how he would want it. So we put him on comfort care only so the doctors and nurses would leave him rest and we all told him it was okay if he wanted to rest that we would all be okay.
We are moving him to a hospice center today to get him the best comfort care we can.
I of course am still holding out hope that he will just hop out of bed and make it through this, but the main hospital doctor told us it would basically be a lottery chance for that to be the case.
This is going to be a very hard time for me because I was so close to him. He is the glue that holds the whole family together and he has always been the one family member that any of us could count on for anything at anytime. I have been spending a lot more time with him lately just watching the nuggets games with him on my way home from work, so I am so happy that I got to spend so much time with him as he is the best and most unselfish man I have ever known!
I wanted to say that I am so proud to have so many friends on here and I am honored to be part of such a great group. You guys are truly wonderful!
