I browse auctioneer websites sometimes in my spare time, and I see that What's Knot to Love on Colfax is scheduled to go up for bids by order of the Colorado Department of Revenue on Friday, January 23.

Here's a link:
http://www.success-auctions.com/?Auction=207

Of course, they could pay their taxes and get the auction canceled, but if it's gone this far, I don't know.

I was just there last week, and it seemed like a nice shop. This could be a good bargain-seeking opportunity.

Oh man that sucks, I have been there a few times and really liked the place and the owner seemed really cool.

I operated a Colorado business for 10 years. Doesn't look like they were hurting for business. I'd guess that the owner(s) got greedy and took out more than they should. Sad that he/she/they figured that the taxes were discretionary. State has NO sense of humor.

Oh, and HELL YEAH on the group buy. We should arrange to be there for this one. This auctioneer has no idea what he has in cigars, or their values.

I was just fantasizing that they got their shipment of Anejos just as DoR locked the doors. Can anyone say 20 boxes of 46's?

The good news is that this was a tax seizure. That means some dude with a badge showed up and escorted everyone off the property. The bad news is that its a low level auction - no more than one hour preinspection and no absentee bidding. Terms are cash on the barrelhead, of which I have little available. Lots including cigars will be at least 10 boxes up to maybe 30 or more. I am taking a vacation day to attend.

Preinspection is 1 hour prior. Bring CASH because I suspect you will be required to post it before you'll be allowed to bid. Some of you have met me, some not. My pic is in my profile. These guys had a Fuente account, so I suspect there will be some HTFs in there. I wouldn't be surprised to see some really good deals to be had, but frankly, not so much among the cigar lots.

I'm interested in pooling cash, but not from anyone who cannot attend. I'm not comfortable with that. I suggest we meet for breakfast prior.

I will be very light on cash, but I should be able to be there. I don't know what cigars but I will be researching some of the items on the list. Lets keep this discussion going.

Here are the terms as posted in the auction. It seems that cash is NOT required, but credit cards are charged a 3.5% buyer's premium:

"All sales are CASH ONLY - CASH IN HAND unless otherwise specified or announced at the sale. All purchases are "as-is" "where-is" with no warranty express or implied. Visa, M/C, and Discover cards accepted with a 3.5% buyer's premium. Buyer's premium waived for cash and certified funds. Checks will NOT be accepted unless presented with a letter of guaranty from the issuing bank. Checks and certified funds MUST be pre-approved by the auctioneer no less than 24 hours prior to the sale or they will NOT be accepted. Click here to learn about alternative payment terms."

Also,
"This sale will be offered first in bulk to a single bidder. Once the bulk-bid is established, the assets will them be sold one lot at a time. Whichever method that brings the highest return will prevail. Announcements the day of sale take precedence over printed notices."

You can also write a personal check if you have a guaranteeing letter from your bank.

My 4c... Take a good close look at all cigars before buying anything! Last time I was in there (admittedly a while ago) it was mold central & many (of the higher end) cigars in the humidor looked like they had been through the tumble dryer. The owner was one of those "it's not mold, it's plume" guys... I could add more, but I'll refrain ;) Might also be worth taking a look at the youtube video(s?) (click link) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NZFbqpny3DU) showing their basement storage.

I'm with you here. I'm thinking sealed boxes, ash trays, and that wooden Indian....and the pipes.

Edit to add: after watching the "owner" on video smoking in his humidor, I'm less enthused. Sacrilidge!

And I bet each of those will be a separate lot no?

Could you imagine winning alot of 30 cases of AF stuff? :new_rofl:

First (just to make sure) case = box. If I was the auction clerk and didn't know cigars, I would package my lots of boxes that look alike, or are the same brand, including open boxes of singles. I wonder if other shops will be bidding on the stock. I'm betting that these lots will go unbelievably low.

Thats why I am sad I won't be there... I would hate to see 30 boxes of Fuentes go for $200

601 60 cases

It was mentioned that all the cigars I've noted were separate counts from the open boxes that are there.

I'm still going, but I'm not as pumped as before. I'm going with the expectation that I will come home with nothing. The auction format is a different than I'm accustomed to.

This sale will be offered first in bulk to a single bidder. Once the bulk-bid is established, the assets will them be sold one lot at a time. Whichever method that brings the highest return will prevail. Announcements the day of sale take precedence over printed notices.

It is possible that we could go through the whole thing, then lose our bids because the bulk bid nets more. Nevertheless, I'm going to try. My cell is 720-982-9541. If you're going, please send me a text with your name. I'll be there at 9 sharp.

It also says

All purchases are "as-is" "where-is" with no warranty express or implied

So, if you open up the box of cigars you just bought and they are all dried out, or white and fuzzy, or full of beetle holes, tough luck.

Knowing all that, I'm still planning on being there with a wad of cash "just in case"!

Hi Bruce:

The humidifiers have been checked and maintained daily (except for Sunday). We do not have a more detailed inventory list than what we have currently posted.

Have the upper and lower humidors been maintained since the seizure? Cigars dry out quickly in Denver. Is there a more detailed inventory available? If not, then will there be?
